After more than 30 years of professional photography assignments, I’ve learned that every project presents a new challenge—and often an opportunity to learn something completely unexpected.
That is one of the things I continue to enjoy most about being a photographer. One day I may be photographing a wedding, family, executive headshot, corporate event, or advertising campaign. The next, I may find myself learning about an entirely new business and figuring out the best way to communicate what makes that business unique through photography and visual storytelling.
That was certainly the case when Iris McCray of Joy 2 B Sound contacted me about creating branding content for her growing sound healing practice.
When Iris first invited me to visit her sound studio, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Sound healing was outside my personal experience, but the concept immediately sparked my curiosity. Iris is a sound healing practitioner who uses instruments and vibration as part of experiences centered around relaxation, meditation, and overall well-being.
For Christopher Michael Photography, this assignment would become much more than a traditional branding photography session. Iris needed professional photography, video, and sound recording to introduce her business and the new space she was creating. It was an opportunity to bring several different forms of storytelling together to communicate an experience that couldn’t be captured through still photography alone.
Iris had already developed a successful sound healing practice through her work at art and health centers when she began creating something more personal at her home studio.
Over several years, she transformed the space into what I would describe as a Sound Sanctuary—a peaceful environment designed for meditation, relaxation, sound experiences, and sound baths.
What fascinated me from a photography perspective was that so much of what Iris offers is something you don’t necessarily see. The instruments create sounds and vibrations that are central to the experience, while the surroundings, atmosphere, and Iris’s interaction with those instruments establish the sense of calm and connection she wants people to feel.
That presented an interesting creative challenge:
How do you visually communicate an experience that is fundamentally built around sound?
That question became the foundation for the entire project.
For any business, effective branding photography should do more than provide attractive photographs for a website. The imagery should help prospective clients understand the person behind the business, the environment they’ll enter, and what they can expect from the experience.
For Iris, that meant creating much more than a traditional portrait. I wanted to photograph her working naturally within the Sound Sanctuary and interacting with the instruments she uses, while also capturing details of the studio, environmental imagery, and professional portraits that reflected the atmosphere she had spent years creating.
But photography could only tell part of the story.
A still image could show Iris playing one of her instruments, but it couldn’t allow someone to hear the instrument or experience how sound fills the space. That’s where professional video and audio recording became essential parts of the project.
While the majority of my assignments at Christopher Michael Photography are centered around still photography, I’ve always enjoyed incorporating video when it helps tell a story more completely. For this project, I recorded professional sound while simultaneously filming with multiple cameras, giving me the flexibility to combine wider views of the environment with closer perspectives of Iris, her instruments, and the details of the experience.
The footage was then brought together in post-production and edited into an approximately three-minute branding video for the launch of her website. Because Joy 2 B Sound is built around sound, the quality of the audio was just as important as the visuals—it couldn’t simply be an afterthought.
Together, the branding photography, professional video, and sound recording allowed us to create a much more complete representation of Joy 2 B Sound. Rather than simply showing potential clients what the Sound Sanctuary looks like, the content could begin to communicate what it might actually feel and sound like to experience it.
For a service-based business, that kind of authentic storytelling can be especially valuable. Potential clients aren’t simply purchasing a product; they’re deciding whether they connect with a person, a place, and an experience before they ever walk through the door.
The story of Joy 2 B Sound wasn’t limited to what was happening inside the Sound Sanctuary.
The surrounding property and natural environment were also an important part of the atmosphere Iris had created. I wanted the finished imagery and video to give viewers a broader sense of place, so we took the production outside as well.
I photographed and filmed the surrounding landscape and wildlife, looking for details that complemented the peaceful feeling of the studio and helped establish the environment around it.
I also had the opportunity to put my drone in the air.
Using drone photography and videography allowed me to establish the property from an entirely different perspective. Aerial footage provided a broader view of the location while helping visually connect the Sound Sanctuary with the natural setting surrounding it.
Combining aerial footage, traditional video, professional audio, environmental portraits, and detailed still photography gave us a much more complete collection of content for the website launch.
Instead of simply showing what Joy 2 B Sound looks like, the goal throughout the project was to help people begin to understand what it might feel like to be there.
One of my favorite things about running a photography business is the people and experiences I’m introduced to along the way. After more than three decades behind the camera, every assignment still offers an opportunity to step into someone else’s world and learn something new.
Working with Iris was a perfect example.
I began knowing very little about sound healing and finished the project having photographed her practice, recorded professional sound, worked with multiple video cameras, edited a branding film, and captured aerial footage of the property with my drone.
It was also a reminder that being a professional photographer isn’t only about knowing how to create a great photograph. Sometimes a client’s story requires you to think beyond the still image and determine which combination of photography, motion, sound, and environment will communicate their message most effectively.
That willingness to explore new ideas keeps the work interesting for me, even after more than 30 years.
Every assignment has a story, and sometimes the ones that take me outside my usual routine are the ones that inspire me most.
At Christopher Michael Photography, I work with entrepreneurs, professionals, organizations, and businesses to create imagery that helps communicate not only what they do, but also who they are and what makes their experience different.
Depending on the project, that can include personal branding photography, commercial photography, professional headshots, environmental portraits, corporate photography, event coverage, video production, and drone photography and videography.
For businesses with a service or experience that can be difficult to communicate through words alone, combining professional photography and video can be particularly powerful. Instead of relying on generic imagery, we can create original visual content around your people, environment, process, and personality.
The goal is to create content that feels authentic to your brand while helping potential clients understand your business before they ever contact you.
Christopher Michael Photography serves businesses and professionals throughout Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, Maryland, and the surrounding region, including Haymarket, Gainesville, Warrenton, Manassas, Bristow, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, and Loudoun County.
