Capturing Candid Connections: Texas Business Conference & Black Tie & Boots Gala

Washington DC Event Photography

As an experienced Washington DC event photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to document a wide range of events across the city—from large‑scale corporate conferences and nonprofit galas to intimate VIP dinners and high‑profile political gatherings. Each event comes with its own rhythm, energy, and set of challenges, and I’ve learned how to adapt quickly to capture moments as they naturally unfold.

Earlier this year, I was invited to photograph one of the most dynamic events on my calendar: the Texas Business Conference and Black Tie & Boots Gala, held over two full days at the iconic Washington Hilton on January 18–19, 2025. The event brought together business leaders, elected officials, performers, and guests from across the country for a celebration that blended professional networking with unmistakable Texas flair.

While it wasn’t one of the official inaugural balls tied directly to the presidential inauguration, the scale and production of the event were still impressive. Organized by the Texas State Society, the conference and gala carried significant cultural and social weight, drawing a large, enthusiastic crowd and a full lineup of live entertainment. From daytime business programming to the evening’s formal gala—complete with black tie attire paired with cowboy boots—the event was a vibrant expression of Texas pride, hospitality, and tradition, all set against the backdrop of Washington, D.C.

With two days of programming, multiple venues within the hotel, and a fast‑moving schedule, the event required thoughtful coverage and a documentary approach. It was a true example of how large‑scale events in the nation’s capital demand flexibility, awareness, and experience—qualities I bring to every assignment as a professional Washington DC event photographer.

The Venue: Washington Hilton, DC

Situated in the heart of the nation’s capital at 1919 Connecticut Ave. NW, the Washington Hilton is no stranger to large-scale gatherings. With its spacious ballrooms, high ceilings, and elegant lighting, it served as the perfect canvas for this high-profile event, hosted by the Texas State Society in coordination with Neste Live Private Events.

As a photographer, one of my first goals at any event is to get a feel for the space—how the light moves, where key moments will unfold, and how best to blend into the environment to capture candid, storytelling imagery. The Hilton provided that flexibility. From large-scale speaker panels to intimate VIP moments and high-energy live performances, it offered a backdrop that elevated every frame.

My Role: Candid Moments and Authentic Light

I was part of a larger photography team, hired by a media company to cover the event across both days. While there were plenty of formalities and posed portraits, my focus was on capturing real, candid moments—those unscripted interactions that tell the true story of an event.

To get the best results, I used a technique I often rely on for large galas and ballroom settings:

  • Expose for the background to retain the natural ambiance and lighting of the room

  • Use minimal flash to softly illuminate my subjects without overpowering the mood

This approach produces photos that look and feel more organic—closer to how the scene appeared in person, with a warmer, more inviting atmosphere. It’s a method I’ve honed over the years while shooting high-end events across D.C. and the DMV region.

A Texas-Style Celebration in the Capital

The Black Tie & Boots Gala is a non-partisan tradition typically held around the time of the presidential inauguration. It brings together Texans in D.C., local leaders, performers, and invited guests for a night of Texas music, culture, and celebration. Hosted by the Texas State Society, the 2025 event featured performances from 14 live acts, including the iconic Fish Drill Team, all booked by the Neste Live Private Events team.

From cowboy boots paired with tuxedos to country music echoing through the ballroom, the night was a vibrant expression of state pride in a national setting. And behind the lens, I was capturing every note, every smile, every toast.

Business by Day, Boots by Night

The Texas Business Conference portion of the event featured presentations, panels, and networking designed to foster professional connections among Texas-based organizations and D.C. policy-makers. It was a unique fusion of state-level business development and national politics, wrapped in a celebratory tone.

Photographing the conference required a different approach—more documentary in nature, with an emphasis on speaker engagement, attendee reactions, and branded visuals for press and promotional use.

Switching between daytime conference coverage and evening gala photography is something I love—because it showcases the range and flexibility required of a professional Washington DC event photographer. Each part of the event tells its own story, and it's my job to weave those together through visuals.

Events like the Black Tie & Boots Gala are more than just fun—they’re an important platform for connection, culture, and communication. Whether it's a government networking event, a private gala, or a multi-day business conference, having the right photographer ensures those moments aren’t just experienced—they’re remembered and shared.
