As a Northern Virginia branding photographer, I often find myself working with professionals at pivotal moments in their careers—those in‑between seasons where something new is taking shape. These are the moments when experience meets reinvention, when a long career evolves into a more personal vision, and when a public image needs to accurately reflect both credibility and character.
Recently, I had the opportunity to work with Jack St. Clair, a highly respected business consultant with more than 20 years of experience in Washington, D.C. Jack had reached a turning point in his career and was preparing to launch his own independent consulting firm in Northern Virginia, St. Clair Strategies. After years of working within established consulting environments, he was ready to build a brand that felt truly his—one that communicated trust, leadership, and approachability in equal measure.
From our first conversation, it was clear that Jack understood the importance of strong visual branding. He wasn’t looking for generic corporate headshots or overly posed images. Instead, he wanted photography that would reflect who he really is: a thoughtful strategist, a collaborative leader, and someone clients could easily connect with. His goal was to present himself as confident and polished, without feeling rigid or impersonal.
The direction was clear—natural, authentic, and versatile imagery that could live comfortably across his website, professional profiles, presentations, and marketing materials. The photos needed to feel approachable yet refined, relaxed yet intentional. That balance is exactly what I strive for in my work, and it’s where branding photography becomes more than just a portrait session—it becomes a visual foundation for a business.
Jack didn’t yet have a traditional office setup, but he wanted images that conveyed a professional office environment, a small-town feel, and personal connection. He also hoped to include some lifestyle branding photos—portraits of him engaging with peers and enjoying casual moments, like having a drink or chatting with colleagues. These were the kinds of visuals that would help future clients connect with who he is, not just what he does.
As someone launching a personal consulting brand, Jack needed more than just a LinkedIn profile photo. He needed a cohesive set of brand visuals that would:
This kind of visual storytelling is exactly what I focus on at Christopher Michael Photo.
Great branding photography doesn’t happen by chance. It’s all about planning the shoot flow, maximizing natural light, and aligning the visuals with the client’s goals. I revisited the location before the shoot date to develop a tight schedule and assess the best lighting windows.
Here’s how I structured the shoot:
We also used a mix of studio lighting indoors and natural light outdoors—ensuring consistency while keeping the visuals feeling fresh and dynamic.
Every detail was intentional, from the wardrobe to the background selection. The end result? A full gallery of versatile branding images that Jack can use across his new business website, social media platforms, email signatures, and print materials.
After carefully listening to Jack’s goals, I recommended we shoot at the Hilton Garden Inn Haymarket, located in the heart of historic Haymarket, VA. The hotel offered conference rooms and common areas with a polished business look, while the surrounding area provided that small-town charm Jack wanted for the outdoor portraits.

With a quick site visit and some pre-planning, it was clear that this location was the perfect fit—balancing corporate and casual, modern and local.
