As a Washington DC family photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing all kinds of special moments—from quiet newborn sessions to bustling birthday parties filled with laughter, sugar highs, and endless joy. But some families and events truly stand out. One of those families is Leila’s.
Every year, Leila invites me to photograph her children’s birthday celebrations—three unique parties for three incredible kids. Over time, I’ve come to know their personalities, their energy, and their joyful chaos. And every time I return, I feel like more than just a photographer—I feel like part of the family.
This year, we celebrated one of those birthdays at a truly unforgettable location: the National Children’s Museum in the heart of Washington, D.C.
Nestled just blocks from the National Mall, the National Children’s Museum is a one-of-a-kind destination. It’s where play meets possibility—blending science, art, and innovation into an interactive experience that feels like magic for kids and grown-ups alike.
From hands-on STEM exhibits to climbing structures, light-and-sound installations, and sensory exploration zones, this museum is a dream venue for a birthday party. It’s colorful, educational, safe, and—most importantly—an absolute blast.
As a children’s event photographer in DC, having such a dynamic environment to shoot in is a creative goldmine. There’s never a dull moment, and no shortage of candid smiles to capture.
When it comes to photographing children’s birthday parties, especially in fast-paced settings like museums or play spaces, I keep things simple, light, and flexible.
Here’s how I approach sessions like this one:
This balance helps me create a visual story that feels genuine, vibrant, and full of heart.
What I love most about returning to families like Leila’s is the trust we build over time. Her kids know me, and I’ve watched them grow. I’ve seen baby teeth come out and new friendships form. I’ve photographed hugs from grandparents, goofy moments with cousins, and whispered birthday wishes over lit candles.
As a family photographer serving Washington DC and the greater DMV region, I don’t just document events—I preserve emotion. These images become part of a family’s legacy. They’re flipped through in photo books, printed for grandparents, and revisited years later with warm nostalgia.
At the party, there were themed decorations, cupcakes galore, and a rush of curiosity as the kids explored the museum exhibits. They built, they danced, they played—and I stayed in the background, watching the day unfold through my lens.
The birthday song. The cake smash. The quiet hug between parent and child. These are the moments that matter.
And whether you’re hosting your party at a local park, your own home, or a museum like this one, I bring the same storytelling approach to every session.
Are you planning a birthday party in Washington, D.C., or somewhere in the DMV? Want images that go beyond just snapshots—photos that make you feel something years from now?
